Dojo Survival

DOJO SURVIVAL GUIDE
( or how to avoid unnecessary pushups and bollockings)

1. Punctuality – always strive to be early, its not always possible but do your best.

2. Always make standing bow (tachirei) on entering and leaving the dojo.

3. The mats are to be swept before every training session …don’t wait to be asked, be proactive.

4. Attend to your personal hygiene before coming to train. Keep your dogi clean, nails short and take off all jewellery or tape over it. Tie back long hair.

5. Always make tachirei towards the kamiza when stepping onto and leaving the mat.

6. Whilst waiting for sensei use your time constructively by warming up, stretching or some other aspect of practice. A bit of socialising is also O.K.

7. When given any command react quickly and act briskly.
Acknowledge with the word “OSU”.

8. Always maintain a tidy posture in the dojo…don’t lean, slouch, cross arms or put hands on hips.

9. Try to maintain concentration and awareness at all times in the dojo, in particular when receiving instruction from sensei.

10. Perform your etiquette sincerely and correctly. SEE GUIDE TO DOJO ETTIQUETTE FOR DETAILS. Ettiquette (or Reigi) is a fundamental part of Budo training.

11. At all times be respectful towards your Sensei and your seniors .If a senior support and assist more junior practitioners.

12. Respect and protect your training partner. Be sincere in your bow of gratitude on completion of practice.

13. Always get sensei’s permission before leaving and re-entering the mat during training.

14. Keep talking to a minimum whilst training, but do ask sensei if you are uncertain about anything.

15. Train with enthusiasm and some intensity, as if your life depended on it!. Never use the words “I can’t”, because you can!!!!!!! This is the study of AiCANdo.

16. Finally…………Don’t think - just train !!

REMEMBER THIS IS BUDO – LIFE OR DEATH – ONE SLIP AND YOU’RE HISTORY!!!!

HOW YOU CONDUCT YOURSELF IN THE DOJO IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT TO HOW YOU PERFORM YOUR TECHNIQUES AND YOU WILL BE JUDGED ACCORDINGLY.
